Michael was born to an Irish mother from South Armagh and a second generation Irish father whose family moved from Kilrush in Co. Clare to Blackburn, Lancashire in England. His parents were married in wartime Liverpool and Michael was brought up in Lancashire. After graduating from University College London with a degree in economics and politics, Michael enjoyed a career in information technology, working for several large British and American companies in senior project management roles.
During his life, Michael developed a keen interest in genealogy and spent a lot of his spare time unravelling his own Irish and English family history across Co. Armagh and Co. Clare in Ireland and Lancashire in England.
Michael now lives in Westport, Co. Mayo and in 2011 he established his own professional genealogical research service Family Lines. This concentrates on helping those whose ancestors left Ireland for Britain, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere to trace their ancestors and discover where they lived. His services include meticulous and thorough professional research, support for those applying for Irish citizenship, the design and build of Family Trees suitable for display and help for those doing their own research.
Michael was admitted to membership of AGI in 2012. He has served on the AGI Council since 2016, taking responsibility for editing the Newsletter “Connect” published jointly by the Irish and Scottish genealogical associations. Michael is also a member of the Irish Genealogical Research Society.
Michael has lectured on various genealogical subjects both in Ireland at City Colleges in Dublin and in the USA. He also currently serves as a professional guide to those coming to Ireland who want to visit the land where their ancestors lived and worked and to explore local places of family interest.
Michael is currently President of AGI.
