Paul Gorry has had a lifelong interest in local and family history, dabbling in both by the age of ten. He has worked in genealogical research professionally since 1979. Paul began his career as a freelance researcher for the Genealogical Office, then central to Irish ancestral research. Since 1987 he has run the firm of Gorry Research.
He is a native of Baltinglass in West Wicklow. Having lived in Dublin for two decades, he returned to Baltinglass in 1999. While he has conducted research on all parts of Ireland over four decades, and continues to do so, his primary focus is on the south-eastern counties of Carlow, Kildare, Wexford and Wicklow.
Paul was a founder member of the West Wicklow Historical Society. He is a long standing member of the Co. Kildare Archaeological Society, the Irish Genealogical Research Society (IGRS) and the Society of Genealogists (SoG) [London]. In 1999 he was awarded the Fellowship of the SoG. In 2005 he was elected a Fellow of the IGRS, and in 2017 he became one of its Vice-Presidents. Paul also was a founder member of Accredited Genealogists Ireland. He served as its Secretary and its President. In 2022 he was elected a Fellow of the organisation.
With his AGI colleague, Máire Mac Conghail, he was joint-author of Tracing Irish Ancestors (1997). His other books include Baltinglass Chronicles, 1851-2001 (2006), Seven Signatories: Tracing the Family Histories of the Men Who Signed the Proclamation (2016) and Credentials for Genealogists: Proof of the Professional (2018).
