Areas of research: All of Ireland
Special interests: legal & probate
David McElroy has been involved in genealogical research for 30 years and specialises in legal and probate research in Ireland, Britain and the rest of the English-speaking world. He is the Founder and Director of Ingram Garrett & Schofield Ltd, Northern Ireland’s only officially registered research agency specialising in legal and probate research and the longest-established such agency in Ireland.
David has been at the forefront of Irish genealogy and following discussions with Bord Failte (Irish Tourist Board) in the mid-1980s, was asked to investigate the potential formation of a professional body embracing the whole of the Island of Ireland. It was from this fledgling idea that AGI was formed in 1986. David has served on the Association’s Council representing the interests of its members in Northern Ireland and is currently a member of the General Register Office of Northern Ireland (GRONI) Users Group. During the late 1980s he toured extensively in Canada and USA delivering a series of lectures to local genealogy and family history groups.
Although he does not currently accept commissions to undertake family history research, David retains an active interest in this area and has succeeded in tracing his own family tree as far back as the late 17th century. He is now involved exclusively in the field of tracing missing or unknown heirs in matters of intestacy and provides such a service throughout the English-speaking world.
