Des Murtagh was born and grew up in Dublin. He has worked in all sectors of the Irish educational system. He holds degrees and diplomas in Education, Adult Education, Theology and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. His studies have required conducting extensive research of both primary and secondary sources. In addition he has successfully completed a Diploma in Family History Research (Genealogy) through the Independent College, Dublin in Spring 2014. The Diploma was delivered in conjunction with the Accredited Genealogists Ireland (AGI).

Des has had an interest in family history / genealogy for most of his life and over the last 20 years he has developed a deeper approach to genealogy working by extensively constructing and documenting his own family tree. This work required familiarity with records and resources and at the same time discovering alternative routes to obtain new information when faced with obstacles and challenges often referred to as ‘the brick wall’.

In addition Des has a substantial knowledge of IT / website design and has maintained a personal family history website for the past 10 years. His website, as well as the sharing of information, has enabled further communication with persons around the world who have discovered common ancestry resulting from the emigration of family members to UK, Canada, USA and Australia over the past 150 years.

Over the last couple of years he has pursued and deepened his full-time interest in genealogy and has gone on to set up his own business (Murtagh Genealogy Services) in order to provide assistance to others in tracing their ancestral family members.
