A new term of the “Professional Certificate in Family History Research” run by City Colleges and Accredited Genealogists Ireland, commences on 26th September 2024.
This is a foundation level course for those with little or no experience of family history research or those who have been exploring their own family but would like a little help from professional know-how. The Certificate course stands alone but can also be a stepping stone to more in depth study in the Diploma which follows in the Spring term.
The Foundation Level examines the principal sources for Irish genealogy, the so-called “pillars”, of civil, church and census records along side the main land surveys of the nineteenth century. It also tackles the subject of research itself, from co-ordinating notes to assessing the value of each piece of information and finally putting together a professional standard report. Sources such as newspapers and military records are also explored and there is a guided visit to the National Library of Ireland to give students hands-on experience of a great repository.
During the course, there are four short homework assignments to be completed by students which will form 40% of the final grade. For the end of term, students are required to complete a genealogical report on at least two generations of a family line incorporating copies of relevant records.
This year for the first time, the course explores the world of DNA research. Previously addressed only at Diploma level, this new subject reflects the increasing importance of DNA testing in modern genealogy and is an introduction to the immensely important world of genetic genealogy.
By the end of this course, students should have an excellent grasp of technique for family history research in Ireland and the ability to co-ordinate their research and compile an evidence based, readable report.
