Dr Des Murtagh was born and grew up in Dublin. He has worked in all sectors of the Irish educational system from primary to 3rd level. He holds a number of degrees and diplomas in Education, Adult Education along with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. His range of studies over the years has required conducting extensive research of both primary and secondary sources. In 2014, he successfully completed a Diploma in Family History Research (Genealogy) through the Independent College, Dublin. This Diploma course was delivered in conjunction with the Accredited Genealogists Ireland (AGI).
Des has had an interest in family history and genealogy for most of his life and for over 20 years, he has developed a deeper approach to genealogy research, beginning with extensively constructing and documenting his own family tree. This task required familiarity with records and resources in addition to developing skills to examine alternative routes to find new information when faced with obstacles and challenges, often referred to as facing ‘the brick wall’.
Des has a substantial knowledge of IT and website design and has maintained a personal family history website for the past 15 years. As well as sharing information, the website has enabled further communication with people around the world who have discovered common ancestry arising from the emigration of family members over the past 170 years to the UK, Canada, USA and Australia.
For nearly 10 years, Des has worked full-time in genealogy having set up his own business (Murtagh Genealogy Services) and website in order to provide assistance to others who wish to trace their Irish family ancestors. Des is also a member of the Irish Genealogical Research Society and is part of the Genealogy Advisory team at the National Archives of Ireland.
Dr Des Murtagh, MA, EdD, Dip in Family History Research (Genealogy).
